Day 20
Max and I took a break to go grab some dinner at Subway.
Hey dammit, put down my new camera!

I said PUT IT DOWN!

Damned kids
Once we got back it was time to put this pile of guts to bed. The tranny, not Max. He is close behind tho.
While Guzzis are wonderful bikes, they do have some weak points. Not major things mind you...small annoying things...but they are...annoying. One of those things on the 4 and 5 speed trannies is the shift return spring. Particularly on the 4 speed. It is a design flaw. The shifter shaft has no seal or even an o-ring on it. So sometimes moisture gets in there, corrodes the spring and one day you shift and the lever just lays there like a broke wing duck. Lots of guys too lazy to dive in and fix it have come up with some interesting Rube Goldberg solutions. Now that the 4 speed has this nifty second cover and a small compartment for the spring says to me that they *knew* the design was flawed. Or maybe they didnt have the wherewithal in the 70s to put in seals. I dunno. Except that with the 4 speed, the compartment retains the peices if the thing breaks (good) and the separate compartment means the spring can be changed with the tranny in place (better). The 5 speed has no such compartment...but it does have an O-ring..but those break too. and then the small bit that breaks off drops in the tranny, just waiting to jump up into the gears and chew em up. Sucks. ANd you gotta pull those and crack the case to replace the spring. yech. Really sucks if you replace it with a pre-distressed defective one.
Here's the spot I'm talking about.

Did I mention I love gasgacinch? no scraping. just peel up the old gasket, possibly even reusable. But since gaskets are (for now) cheap...we'll put in a new one.
Here's a new spring alongside the one in the tranny. The one in place I put in a while back. I'm not gonna replace it. There is a superstition about these things. Every single time I hear of a guzzi dude pulling out an un broken spring and replacing it just because he is in there....the new one breaks quickly. I dunno what it is. some sort of mojo. Anyhow, I dont see any rusty spots on the one already in there so I am gonna leave it alone and button it back up. The new one will be stuffed in a corner of the toolbag for the trip.

Reassembly was judged to be beyond my ham-fisted abilities. So we outsourced that portion of the task to contract workers with expertise in that particular area.

Jebus...my shop is a mess.
