Back Together

I'm still working on choice A. If the paint guy would quit disappearing and call me back when he promises, I would be golden. But in the meantime progress continues.

Remember the fubared gasket?
This is much mo bettah

I prolly should have gotten two as we will find out later.

This blurry pic is designed to illustrate part of the reason I am opening this box of metal. The worm gear that drives the speedo cable slides onto this output shaft. But my speedo didnt work. I learned that when I assembled this pile when replacing the seals some time back...I neglected to put in the tiny ball that acts as a woodruff key to hold the worm gear in place. oops. So now I have gasket, new seal, woodruff ball(?). Good to go. I schmeared grease on the channel that takes the ball to keep the little bugger from slipping into the guts of the tranny when I slip it all together.

Here we see the worm gear (which would fit me nicely as a ring if I didnt have another use for it) with another dab of grease to help trap the ball in place.

Here we see another craptastic pic (sorry new camera) The worm gear on the shaft and the shiney blob next to it is the woodruff ball. After an hour and about a dozen attempts to assemble, I discover that this assembly is exactly ass-backwards. The ball and gear go the other way around. In my defense, there are really no good pics or assembly illustrations of this part. *sigh* SO this is why I should have gotten a second gasket. Fortunately we love gasgacinch here in this old bike shop. and I hope the gasket will be up to the task after all the assembly attempts.

Here is the lump all back together, slathered in concrete degreaser for cleaning.

But wait...there's more. Take a look at that little cover on the shifter. That is where we go next.
